Hair Products: Which One Is Right for You

Every day we see clients using the wrong product for their hair type. A man with fine hair using heavy wax that flattens it, or another with thick hair using a light gel that gives no control. Choosing the right product is as important as choosing the right cut. At Barberlife we give you a direct guide based on our daily experience with hundreds of hair types.

Each product has a specific purpose

By Hair Type

If your hair is fine and straight, you need products with light to medium hold that add volume without weighing down: texturizing powder, sea salt spray, or light matte clay. If your hair is thick and straight, you need more control: strong hold pomade, modeling wax, or fiber paste. For wavy hair, a defining cream or light gel enhances your natural waves. For curly hair, nourishing oil and anti-frizz cream are your best allies.

By Finish Type

Finish matters as much as hold. Pomade gives shine (ideal for formal looks and slicked-back styles). Clay gives a matte finish (perfect for casual and textured looks that appear natural). Wax gives a subtle medium shine. Gel gives rigid hold and maximum shine (ideal for hairstyles that should not move all day). Fiber paste gives texture with flexible hold and a semi-matte finish.

Your barber can recommend the ideal product

Product quantity also matters. The general rule: start with less than you think you need. It is easier to add product than to remove it without re-washing your hair. For pomade and wax, a pea-sized amount is enough for short to medium hair. Always warm the product between palms until it is translucent before applying: this ensures even distribution without clumps.

At Barberlife we use and sell the products we recommend because we test them daily on our clients. Our barbers can give you a demo with the product that best suits your hair during your next visit, so you see the result before buying. It is the most honest way to sell: by showing, not promising.
